Passports for Children

v50a_1956

Many people are looking for holidays at La Manga Club during the next few months, as well as the traditionally popular months of July and August. May and June tend to be popular with families with pre-school children as they can take advantage of the fantastic offers for May and June, plus the temperature at the resort averages a pleasant 27 degrees.

One important thing to remember when travelling with children, is to organise getting their passports in time for your holiday. Gone are the days where children can be listed on their parents passport. Nowadays every child and even babies, needs a passport which will be valid for five years.

You can obtain a passport form from your local Post Office branch.  You can also request a form from the Post Office’s website if getting to the Post Office with your baby is tricky.

It might also be wise to check your own passport is in date too!

Ryder Cup

Ryder Cup 2012

Congratulations to Europe for winning the 39th Ryder Cup!

The USA led 10–6 at the start of the final day’s play but Europe came back to win the competition by 14½ points to 13½ and secure the Ryder Cup for the fifth time in the last six contests. The comeback emulated that made by the USA in 1999 when they also overturned a four-point deficit on the final day to win the cup. Average savings for Tuesday flights of 35%

Family on beach

Research by consumer group Which? has revealed Tuesday to be the cheapest day for flying out of Britain, with those travelling in the middle of the week able to save significant sums. Which? analysed 1,174 September flights for one person with one piece of checked-in luggage, heading from three London airports to three European destinations: Dublin, Barcelona and Alicante. For outbound flights, Tuesday was the cheapest day for each one of the UK’s three biggest airlines: British Airways, easyJet and Ryanair. With easyJet, travelling from Gatwick to Alicante in Spain on a Friday cost an average of 35 per cent or £28 more than the same trip three days earlier. They found that Sundays were typically the most expensive day for return journeys.

The cheapest options varied between carriers, but those flying with easyJet would pay an average of 45 per cent or £56 more to return to Gatwick from Alicante on a Sunday than if they got back on a Thursday.

Richard Lloyd, executive director of Which?, said: ‘With household budgets squeezed, holidaymakers will want to make sure they are getting a good deal on their flights. We found that people can save a significant sum of money if they shop around and can be flexible, changing the day or time they choose to travel.’

For extra savings on your holiday, as well as shopping around for the cheapest flights, take a look at our Late Deals or our Villas for Less Deals.

Vuelta a Espana

Cycling holiday at La Manga

The 2012 Vuelta a España is underway ending in Madrid on September 9, with the 2011 champion Juan Jose Cobo returning to defend his title as part of the Movistar Team’s line-up.

La Vuelta a España, the Tour of Spain cycling road race, is used to being regarded as the little brother of the tours of France and Italy. The fact remains, however, that La Vuelta has come a long way since its inaugural event in 1935 when a mere 50 riders covered the 14 stages of the race. Not only has the number of racers increased but, the sportsmen no longer drink alcohol as their on course refreshment or borrow bicycles from members of the public when they crash their own.

The parcours features only one individual time trial, 39.4km in stage 11, while the climbers will be able to make their mark during seven mountain stages, including three (stages 15, 16 and 20) which finish on hors catégorie-rated ascents.

If watching the Vuelta a España inspires you to take part in a cycling holiday in Spain, take a look at our information about cycling holidays in La Manga Club >

Celebrate the Arrival of Summer Spanish Style

Fireworks

Alicante is just 1 hour and 20 minutes away from La Manga Club and a great place to visit for the day whilst staying at the resort. From the 20th of June the Fires of San Juan festivities begin. This fiesta celebrates the arrival of summer with music, fireworks, processions, dancing and thousands of people throng the streets of this historic town.

The queen of the fiesta, known as the “Beauty of Fire”, is chosen in May from among the candidates presented by a committee in each neighbourhood. The festivities officially begin on 20 June with the building of enormous bonfires with their tongue-in-cheek cardboard figures which fill the streets of Alicante with wit and good humour. That day the “barracas” or large tents are also installed in the fairground area where the dancing takes place, and where people can enjoy the typical figs and “cocas” (a kind of pastry with tuna, onions and pine nuts). On 21 June the parade of musical groups and the various bonfire committees takes place, with their respective “beauties” and the maids of honour dressed in traditional costumes. The following day there is a floral offering to the city’s patron saint, the Virgen del Remedio; and on 23 June there is the international folkloric dance parade, a colourful procession of dance troupes from all around the world. In addition, every day at two in the afternoon from 20 to 24 June, there are firework displays in the Luceros square: the ear-splitting “mascletás”, which should be seen wearing ear-plugs because of the racket of the firecrackers and rockets. And finally at midnight on 24 June is the “cremá” (burning), the high point of the fiestas. After a spectacular white palm tree of fireworks, the bonfires all over the city are set alight and blaze away amid much merriment and dancing and singing, while fire-fighters shower the merrymakers with water in what is known as the “banyá”.

But the fiesta is not over yet. From 25 to 29 June there is a fireworks competition on the el Postiguet beach, and the historic centre of the town comes alive with a medieval market and a range of shows.

The Post Office research shows the pound has made gains against 24 of 30 leading holiday currencies over the past year.

All the rain we’ve been having in the UK will come as little comfort to even those affected by the hosepipe bans.

Easter at La Manga Club

Easter blog

This year Good Friday is on the 6th of April which isn’t long away now. We’re planning on getting to La Manga Club a few days before and spending a couple of weeks enjoying time with the family during the Easter holidays.

La Manga Club is a great place to be during Easter. Obviously there’s the weather to look forward to, but there’s also lots to do that appeals to the whole family.  In the nearby town of Categena, they are renowned for their Easter processions, which is a great day out for the family.

As a tennis fan, I’m looking forward to the Exhibition Tennis matches being held at La Manga Club’s Tennis Centre. On March 30th and April 6th there’s going to be matches played by British number one, Elena Baltacha. Also, on April 13th British Davis Cup players; Ross Hutchins and Colin Fleming will be playing. I’m also looking forward to playing a few tennis matches whilst I’m at La Manga Club, but I’m not quite at the standard those guys will be playing just yet!

Don’t miss out on the late deals on selected villas and apartments available during the Easter holidays. As well as saving up to £234, you’ll also receive complimentary car hire, see all our prestige villas with private pools.

I hope to see you at La Manga Club this Easter!

Celebrate Nochevieja or New Years Eve!

Celebrate in Style

We love celebrating New Year’s Eve at La Manga Club and enjoy celebrating it the traditional Spanish way. Like the most traditional celebrations in Spain, New year’s Eve, known as “Nochevieja” is usually a family affair. Until midnight people tend to stay at home (or in the villa in our case!) having dinner with the family. The Dinner normally finishes by 12 midnight when the celebration of the twelve grapes starts. The dinner is generally based on canapés of seafood, salmon, pates and cheese followed by meat as a main course like cochinillo, pavo o cordero and the typical sweets of the season as turrones, mazapan, polvorones and peladillas. The desert is reserved for the twelve grapes moment! At the stroke of twelve, there is a tradition of eating twelve grapes.  Everyone has to eat one grape with each ring of the bell, and thus, has to complete one’s share of twelve grapes by the time the clock rings the last bell. The bells are usually listened to from the live telecast of the clock of Puerta del Sol in Madrid.

The tradition of the twelve grapes began when after a particularly big grape harvest the king of Spain decided to give everybody grapes to eat on New Year’s Eve and the legend states that you need to eat one grape on each stroke of the clock to bring good luck for the New Year.  The celebration includes party hats, streamers, balloons and finishes with a celebratory bottle of cava before heading out into the night until after sunrise.

There is another tradition of wearing red underwear on New Year’s Eve, and that too must not be bought by you, but should be gifted or given by someone else. Wearing red coloured underwear is believed to bring good luck in the coming year. Even young people won’t go out with their friends until they have seen the New Year in with their families. It is just after 12 o’clock when the parties start on the streets. New Year’s Eve is traditionally concluded with a visit to the Chocolateria, where delicious chocolate con churros are enjoyed to abate any hunger twinges before the partying really starts. We’re planning on heading out to Si! Restaurant in La Manga Club. They’re hosting a Full Length & Fabulous party. We hope to see you there!

75 Degrees by the Pool!

la_manga_club_villa_pool

I bet you can’t say that if you stayed at home this half term. We visited La Manga Club Resort, one of our favourite destinations. Having two young children, one of the reasons we choose La Manga Club is because it has recently been voted the safest resort in the world, and not for the first time, I might add! We also love the variety of restaurants and activities for the whole family. The flight was on time and we got really good value air fare (so it does pay to book in advance) for the 4 of us.
Because we bought a property several years ago on La Manga Club, accommodation is not an issue, however, you can rent some amazing places for much less than the hotel rates and you have so much more flexibility. Having said that, the Hotel Principe Felipe on the Club is superb and does offer some great deals too from time to time. But if self-catering is for you, you can’t beat La Manga Club at any time of the year!

Visit La Manga Club!

postimg

12 years ago my husband and I couldn’t make up our minds between The Algarve and La Manga Club for our summer holiday.

Being keen golfers both appealed however, we had already visited The Algarve several years before so decided it was time for a change, and what a difference it was!

We arrived via Murcia airport and drove 20 minutes in our hire car to the resort. We followed the directions to the management company to collect our villa keys and entered probably the most beautifully furnished accommodation we had every experienced from a rental company. The views were tremendous which we found to be the case throughout the resort.

We booked our golf for the week on the 3 championship courses and had the time of our lives! We also enjoyed a couple of games of tennis on one of the many floodlit tennis courts and finished our memorable week with a hot stones massage each at the Spa.

Since our first visit 12 years ago, we have probably visited La Manga Club over 100 times and spent an average of 10-12 weeks per year on the resort. In fact we love it so much we purchased a property with lovely views of the golf courses and the Mar Menor beyond.

We now have 6 year old twins and they have grown up visiting La Manga Club and thoroughly enjoy all the sporting facilities aimed at young children – football academy, dance academy, tennis and golf to name a few.

We have also found some stunning world class beaches only a 10 minute drive from the resort.
